2024 Arts Education Program Mural
Location: University Hill Elementary School, Boulder, CO
Artist Sofi Rami led University Hill Elementary School students to create a series of murals installed in the school’s foyer. She worked with the three 5th-grade art classes to paint the murals.
The mural series represents the values and initiatives of Uni Hill, which implements a dual-language program:
Valentía = Courage
Comunidad = Community
Alegría = Joy
Amabilidad = Kindness
Mentalidad de crecimiento = Growth Mindset
The Monarch butterfly featured throughout the murals encapsulates these values, serving as a role model for students.
Like us, Monarch butterflies have the courage to migrate far and wide across multiple generations. We can strive to have the courage of a Monarch butterfly by using our voices to be good allies to our Native Spanish-speaking communities.
Like us, Monarchs communicate in multiple ways, strengthening a diverse community. We can strive to welcome Native teachers, neighbors, and friends into our Uni Hill community.
Like us, Monarchs bring joy to all who mindfully notice them.
We can strive to have the joy of a Monarch butterfly by celebrating the successes and contributions of our Native community members.
Like us, Monarchs do kind work through pollination, contributing to their well-being and that of others. We can strive to have the kindness of a Monarch butterfly by offering a helping hand when our Native community asks for support.
Like us, Monarchs must have a growth mindset to do the hard work needed to complete metamorphosis. We can strive to have the growth mindset of a Monarch butterfly by being open to learning new things about our Native community.
This program was funded by an education grant from the City of Boulder Office of Arts and Culture. Thank you Boulder City Council & Boulder Arts Commission for funding arts education programs like ours in Boulder.
