Street Wise Arts’ flagship program explores the intersection of art and activism (ARTivism) while centering womxn, BIPOC, LGBTQIA, and emerging artists based in Colorado and beyond. In 2024, the Street Wise Mural Festival will spotlight themes of environmentalism and climate action. We invite artists to create murals and public art projects that address this theme, humanizing climate change and its impacts, visualizing scientific data, and connecting viewers to climate scientists and activists. Ultimately we hope artists will educate and empower community members to take action and inspire climate optimism.

Panelists include 2024 muralists Oak Bloak, Apitatán, Catie Michel, K. Vuletich, and Dreamscape. Patrick Maxcy will moderate a discussion of the artists’ Street Wise murals and their environmental themes, activism, and community engagement.

Join Haida/Arapaho master carver Bruce Cook and Arapaho painter Al Hubbard for a discussion moderated by Ojibwe storyteller Marty Strenczewilk on creating art as Native culture bearers. Homelands, now in its third year, is an important art show for the Boulder community, as the Ute, Cheyenne and Arapaho nations whose land we stand upon holds the focus of our attention. Being one of the co-founders of this annual event, Bruce will speak to the experience of building a bridge for Native artists to bring their work back home.

Muralist Lindee Zimmer, The Boulder Watershed Collective, and other local partners are thrilled to tell the tale of beaver in a public mural created during the 2024 Street Wise Mural Festival. This artwork illustrates the beaver’s impact on water, ecosystems and climate change, featuring these keystone species who rehydrate parched landscapes creating wildfire buffers, replenishing groundwater, and expanding habitat for numerous species.

During this panel, Lindee and local watershed and climate resilient practitioners and leaders will discuss this collaborative eco-arts project process and inspiration, and dive into Lindee’s vision to tell the impactful story of beavers. This conversation will examine beaver’s influence on water, ecosystems, wildfire resilience, and climate change. Through an interactive Q&A, audience members will be able to ask panelist questions.

Homelands is an annual exhibition honoring those whose land we stand on: the Ute, Cheyenne, and Arapaho. The exhibition is open from September 13 through November 3.
