Anthony Garcia Sr. at New Vista

2025 Youth Program

Location: New Vista High School, Boulder, CO

Anthony Garcia Sr., aka Birdseed Anthony, recently finished this beautiful mural at New Vista High School. Located in the school's entryway, the mural greets every student, staff, family member and visitor as when they walk into the new school building.

Anthony takes inspiration from the bold serape textiles of the American Southwest. These woven rectangular blankets originate from indigenous weaving practices of Mesoamerica. Trade routes spread the textiles throughout Mexico and the southwestern US. Often associated with Saltillo, Mexico, sarapes created here use bright colors and traditional patterns and feature a diamond shape in the center.

The mural features New Vista's school colors of black and teal in the central band. Students and staff were then invited to help paint their “stripe” and cement their part in the New Vista legacy.

In addition to creating the mural, Anthony also presented his artwork, artist journey, and @thebirdseedcollective project to the students during weekly town hall-style community gatherings.
