Street Wise Arts launched a new Artists-In-Residence program in partnership with the NoBo Art District, in the Gallery at the Bus Stop Apartments. We're hosting five artists for the month of August- Eboni J.D. Freeman, Heather Schulte, Monks & Ninjas, Mr. Hanimal and Savannah Ducharm. Following our mission to advocate for and support artists, this new residency program was created to provide local artists a much needed space to show their work in a professional gallery setting and the use of space to create. The artists all work across different mediums- including painting, sculpture, textiles and writing. Each of the artists creates work through a unique perspective with distinct media and form, while conscious of the impact and varied experiences that we have as humans in the world. This is a unique opportunity for the public to engage with, witness their creative process and support local artists.
Join us for an artist reception, First Friday August 6th from 5:00 - 9:00 pm.
The gallery will be open for visitors on subsequent Fridays from 4-8pm, Saturdays 10-2pm and Sundays 11-3pm and by appointment through the month of August. More special events with the artists to be announced.*
About the Artists
Eboni J.D. Freeman
Eboni J.D. Freeman is an author, podcast producer/host, and wonder star workshop facilitator. After initially gaining popularity as a product accessibility educator across North America and Southeast Asia, she received strong public feedback on her unique take as a home-run: a black, LGBTQ woman with a disability. Eboni’s follow-up act became the publishing of her first two books, ‘Unicorn Care’ - a fantasy fiction tale about a murderous unicorn - and ‘Wonder Stars of the Universe’ - an autobiographical anthology on creating meaning with love, jest, and jive.

Heather D. Schulte
My work utilizes common and domestic materials (like thread, fabric, newspapers, rugs, paper, or acrylic glass) to emphasize language as a fundamental human tool, whether spoken, written, thought, gestured, or typed; communication is part of our intimate and public life. It can connect and divide, wound and heal, build up or tear down, hide and reveal. It shapes us, and we wield it to shape our world.

MonksAndNinjas
Los Angeles born and raised by Mexican and Salvadoran immigrant parents. I was lucky enough to grow up in Hollywood surrounded by murals, film, and culture, that helped shape much of my artistic inspiration, but it’s LA so it was also a wild ride. My story is shaped much by my dad. He immigrated to Los Angeles in his early teens a decade after his mom died in front of him and his dad abandoned him. Upon arriving to the US he immediately became homeless and from there the city threw everything it had at him. I like to joke that I was primarily raised not by an adult or child, but the human embodiment of Los Angeles itself. Early on my dad taught me how to navigate the city without attracting danger. Having someone threaten to kill you or wonder if you should duck from gunshots was as common as saying hello. My parents' drive to give us a better life eventually led me to attend Beverly Hills High through a multicultural program. This was a blessing in disguise that took many years afterwards to appreciate the opportunities it gave me. The school taught me social cues associated with affluent people, which allowed me to intersect with people who I normally wouldn’t cross paths with. Like my wife. Through her I’ve come to call Boulder my home, along with my six year old son and two dogs. Aside from being an artist I am also a devout martial artist and have been teaching for almost 20 years.

Her current work includes vibrant acrylic and gouache paintings of post humans, sculptures made out of polymer clay that are often wearable, botanical illustration, and more. Her work is inspired by her friends and family, by the difference between death and extinction, by playfulness, by many other artists, as well as by social, racial, and economic justice.
