Gregg Deal

Location: Rayback Collective

Photos: Cam Margara + Peter Kowalchuk

Mural Statement

This mural features "Shoshone Pete", a western Shoshone man in black and white with a lightening bolt over his eye representative of David Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust". The intersection of Indigenous people and more contemporary popular culture melds together two things that are ultimately a part of pop-culture, but from different standpoints. This is a clear indication that Indigenous people are still here while simultaneously making a statement of the intersection of our identities in a place that has rendered Indigenous identity as a singular relic that no longer exists. This piece touches on representation, modern existence and identity. It is a piece that both Native and Non-Native people connect with. - Gregg Deal

About the Artist

Gregg Deal (Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe) is a provocative contemporary artist who challenges Western perceptions of Indigenous people, touching on issues of race, history and stereotypes. Through his work—graphic design, paintings, murals work, performance art, filmmaking and spoken word—Deal critically examines issues and tells stories of decolonization and appropriation that affect Indian Country. Deal’s activism exists in his art, as well as his participation in political movements.

Thank you, to Hank and the Rayback Collective, for sponsoring and hosting this mural for Street Wise Boulder 2021.
