In partnership with the Museum of Boulder, our Fall Mural Series celebrates the upcoming exhibition “Proclaiming Colorado’s Black History” opening September 29, 2023. The exhibition works collaboratively to preserve Colorado’s rich and complex Black histories, broadly sharing and integrating them into Colorado education. The Fall Mural Series will take place on September 29-30, 2023.

About the Museum of Boulder’s “Proclaiming Colorado’s Black History”
The Museum of Boulder, in partnership with Adrian Miller, the Boulder County NAACP Chapter, and the Boulder Public Library, will develop activities to highlight the history of Black people in Colorado, thanks to a federal grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (Museums for America) and matching support from Museum and Library contributors.

Over three years (and beyond), the Museum's Project Team will employ a community-centered process to develop an exhibit and educational curricula to address the underrepresentation of Black histories in Colorado. The program will archive original oral histories and research, consolidate research data and make it publicly available, and host a series of programs about race.

This project will give Coloradans a more inclusive understanding of the state’s history by illuminating the stories of Black Coloradans, help the local community examine attitudes about and acknowledge the experience of Black people in Colorado, and ultimately serve as a launching pad for community dialogue and a basis for community action.

Project Overview
The Fall Series will bring murals to walls at various locations throughout Boulder, including the Museum of Boulder, and other cities in Colorado. Murals will feature themes of building community, Afro-Futurism, and social justice. We seek projects from experienced Black and BIPOC artists with a demonstrated ability to create public art that tells the stories of the Black community and engages residents and visitors in meaningful and educational dialogue.

Project Goals
Preserve Colorado’s Black History: Address the underrepresentation of Black histories in Colorado and provide a more inclusive history of the state by telling the stories of Black Coloradoans.

Build Community: Provide spaces for Black community members and visitors to feel seen and to connect with one another. Help the local community examine attitudes about and acknowledge the experience of Black people in Colorado and ultimately serve as a starting point for community dialogue and community action.

Amplify Afro-Futurism: Center Black history and culture and incorporate science fiction, technology, and futuristic elements into public art. Examine the past, question the present, and/or imagine an optimistic future.

Advocate for Social Justice: Integrate Art with Activism (Artivism) to encourage conversations around social justice and community resilience, prioritizing intersectional thinking and storytelling.

Street Wise Arts Launches Summer 2023 Mural Series with Murals by Moe Gram, Grow Love, Danielle DeRoberts Celebrating Community and Collective Healing

Boulder, Colorado – Street Wise Arts is proud to announce its Summer 2023 Mural Series in celebration of community and collective healing through public art. The new Street Wise Arts Mural Series involves the creation of a selection of thematic murals and includes creative collaborations, community events, and special activations. Inspired by our Street Wise Boulder Mural Festival and community projects, the new format brings more community-informed and accessible mural projects to Boulder throughout the year.

In partnership with local businesses and organizations, the Summer Series will feature walls at various locations throughout Downtown Boulder. As we strive to emerge from a challenging time marked by isolation, loss, and uncertainty, art plays a crucial role in bringing people together and promoting healing and mutual care. The new murals will create space for reflection, connection, and healing.

Moe Gram kicked off the Summer Series with the installation of a new mural in partnership with Creature Comforts in June. Grow Love and Danielle DeRoberts will paint the second and third murals in the series in July. Additional artists will be announced and will paint murals that emphasize ideas of collective and individual healing, community, and building a positive future.

The Summer Mural Series is a free event for all ages held throughout the city of Boulder. Panels, workshops, tours, and community events will take place in conjunction with the event. More details will be announced.

The Street Wise Arts Mural Series is made possible by grant support from Visit Boulder, Create Boulder, the City of Boulder Arts Commission, and FPA Gives. Sponsors of the Summer Series include Wana Brands, Unico Properties, and the Blogsmith.
